1. Lampard, Rooney, and Gerrard each look like they're in various stages of taking a shit. Which, I mean, if you've seen any of England's games over the last couple weeks....

2. I think ESPN brought in Rob Liefeld just to draw their thighs.

3. Fabio Capello's glasses aren't fancy enough. And he looks like he might be black here.

4. Decoder-ring time: 8104 is actually an iTunes "unknown error" code. Luckily, we know that the error is trying to play Lampard and Gerrard at the same time.

5. That big '66 is just begging to be Photoshopped. Maybe later.

It's in the cheapest tier of Disney resorts (along with All-Star Sports, All-Star Movies, and Pop Century), and if you don't need much in the way of frills--dining options, spacious rooms, boat/Monorail service--it's a great option. With a discount or two, you're looking at rates as low as $60 per night.

You know how when you were a kid, if your parents weren't obscenely wealthy, you'd get birthday presents that closely resembled the things you'd asked for? Things that were, say, a little less expensive because the manufacturer didn't have to kick any licensing money over to, say, George Lucas? Well, Disney's value resorts seem to operate under similar monetary restrictions. Its lone dining facility, the Intermission Food Court, features an immense, room-spanning mural of musicians who closely resemble many of your favorite stars. And honestly, sometimes the resemblance isn't very close at all. Exhibit A:

This isn't actually connected to the mural--it's on a different wall--but it serves as a nice little amuse bouche (amuse yeux?). The guy on the right could be Mick Jagger's stand-in, if you squint and have a couple beers in you. The woman on the left might be...Tina Yothers? David St. Hubbins?

So now, after picking up our Mickey Waffles and coffee, we get to the main seating area and the mural proper. If you think you know who some of theses people might be, feel free to leave your guesses in the comments.

1. For me, this Marilyn Monroe is the only clearly recognizable celebrity of the bunch. It's pretty unambiguous. This is deceptive, and only serves to enhance your confusion when you see the rest of the Almost-Stars.

3. Liz swears this is supposed to be Michael Bolton, but the guitar--a twelve-string, no less--tells me otherwise. And his hair is too straight. Woody Harrelson in Yes Can Do: The Daryl Hall Story?

7. That's totally Amanda Plummer on the right. Maybe a lost Reagan cousin on the left. In the middle...Martin Short in half-drag, maybe. This is where my head starts to hurt.

8. Liz says this one's a young Queen Elizabeth II. She sure could swing!

10. I mean, there's kind of a Nigel Tufnel thing going on, but his clothes are way too '80s Springsteen. Or maybe it's David Coverdale in an Eddie Van Halen wig.

12. There's no question that this is Yeardley Smith, of Herman's Head and Lisa Simpson fame.

13. These two just look so powerfully strange together, I can't bear to separate them. Again, no idea. Maybe a Bangle? And a miniature Bob Dylan, as portrayed by some lost Turturro brother with a thing for bolo ties?

Well, I hope you enjoyed our little tour of the Intermission Food Court. As a reward for those of you who made it to the end, these little Lucite-mounted beauties adorn the trash receptacles in the same room at All-Star Music. Wrong Cinderella, guys!

It's a comedic fantasy novel (the first in Pratchett's sprawling, 37-volume-and-counting Discworld series) that takes place in a world full of treachery, conflict, and catastrophic incompetence, where "the Gods are not so much worshipped as blamed." It was the coolest thing I owned, until I opened the mail on Tuesday.

Kevin Huizenga is one of my favorite cartoonists - he's one of the few people whose new work I buy no questions asked. Among his many projects is Amazing Facts ... and Beyond! With Leon Beyond, a fake-trivia strip he co-creates with Ted May and Dan Zettwoch for the St. Louis Riverfront Times. When the guys were informed that there wasn't enough money in the paper's budget to keep the strip going, they launched the Beyondathon, in an effort to save Leon. You supply a donation and a topic, and Kevin, Dan, or Ted would supply the cartoon.

Well, yeah, I wasn't going to pass that up. I originally asked Kevin to do something about Newcastle United, my adopted home team in the English Premier League (that's soccer, folks!). When he emailed to get a little more information, I wavered and wobbled and said he could also do something about the Grateful Dead, since I was on a pretty obsessive kick at the time. Most likely losing patience with me, Kevin sent a simple email: "I'll do both." And boy howdy he did. If you want a better look at the finished product, check out the scan over on the Amazing Facts blog.

If you want to check out some of Huizenga's non-Leon stuff, I love his adaptation of Sheridan Le Fanu's "Green Tea" (you can read the first part here; the whole story is in the excellent Curses hardcover collection), and his Ganges #2 was rightfully near the top of many best-of-2008 lists. If you dig the Amazing Facts stuff, you can also get their first collection, The Factoids of Life.

The Beyondathon is still accepting requests, so if you're into this stuff, get in on it while you can!

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.cigarettesandcoffee.com/posts/2009/5/5/summertime-jams-and-u92s-new-zine.html"><rss:title>Summertime Jams and U92's New Zine</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.cigarettesandcoffee.com/posts/2009/5/5/summertime-jams-and-u92s-new-zine.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Grateful Dead Music Scarlet Begonias U92 WWVU Wireless</dc:subject>

The lastest issue of Wireless, the official zine of my college-radio alma mater, U92, is now available for download - you can grab the PDF, plus the first two issues, here. (If you're in Morgantown, you can also stop by the station and pick up a print copy.)

I wish we'd been doing these during my tenure at the station. There's something impossibly romantic about little underground mags like this; they speak directly to my inner J-school student, his fingers still all smudgy with newsprint, his head buzzing with strange new chemicals and a surface-at-best understanding of Hunter S. Thompson's importance as a journalist. Those truly were the days.

Anyway. Yeah, it would have been a lot of fun to work on this. If you're into college-type music, give it a look. There's a good summer-festival roundup, some interviews with people I've quite frankly never heard of, a handful of reviews and previews, and even a chana masala recipe. Something for everyone.

One thing that caught my eye was the Favorite Summer Albums feature on p. 32. I'm having a hell of a time coming up with my top summer long-player, but in terms of songs, I'm thinking it's mighty difficult to top this one.

Of course, if I'd played that during a regular airshift, Alex would have drop-kicked me out the back door or made me eat a copy of Soul Mining or something.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.cigarettesandcoffee.com/posts/2009/4/16/app-store-obsession-brushes.html"><rss:title>App Store Obsession: Brushes</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.cigarettesandcoffee.com/posts/2009/4/16/app-store-obsession-brushes.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>App Store Obsession Brushes Stephen Colbert The Colbert Report iPhone Apps iPod Touch</dc:subject>

Brushes
by Steve Sprang
$4.99
(Buy it from the App Store)

So yeah, that's the first thing I painted with Brushes the night I downloaded it - give me a break, I was in bed watching The Colbert Report! The app comes with a gallery of sample images that almost certainly were not created on a clumsy electronic device with only a fingertip and a few simple paintbrush tools. Images like this.

Because, I mean, that's absurd. Until, that is, you watch someone who knows what they're doing.

If you're willing to take the time to get the hang of the tools, you can do some pretty amazing things with Brushes. Any images you create with it can be dumped to your computer's primary photo library, and the program will set up a dedicated Brushes gallery on your local network for non-iPhone viewing in your web browser.

At $5, Brushes isn't exactly cheap by App Store standards (as yet there is no free "Lite" version), and its tools can be described as either "limited" or "freeing in their simplicity." If you know what you're doing, you can probably make something pretty nice with it. If you're closer to my level, you might want to hold out for a more beginner-friendly drawing app. Or at least have the decency not to show people your crappy pictures.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.cigarettesandcoffee.com/posts/2009/4/15/what-your-mamas-gonna-do-tonight.html"><rss:title>What Your Mama's Gonna Do Tonight</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.cigarettesandcoffee.com/posts/2009/4/15/what-your-mamas-gonna-do-tonight.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Music NNew Pornographers Neko Case</dc:subject>

This one's a few years old, but it proves once again that Neko Case can sing anything. And that the New Pornographers are the best band in the world. But you already knew that.

</rss:item></rdf:RDF>
